GIM Fellowship

Overview

The General Internal Medicine Fellowship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center is a two-year fellowship that provides education and training and experience in mentored research projects to prepare general internists for an academic research career.

General Internal Medicine Fellowship applicants are physicians who have completed a three-year internal medicine residency program in the U.S., and are board-eligible or board-certified in internal medicine. The GIM fellowship is situated within the highly regarded and experienced Montefiore Einstein Division of General Internal Medicine.

During the General Internal Medicine Fellowship, physicians participate in activities focused on research education and training, research implementation, and clinical care and content expertise. Because much of the clinical research is among underrepresented minority populations living in the Bronx, the General Internal Medicine Fellowship Program is particularly interested in receiving applications from physicians from underrepresented minority groups.

Program Goals

  1. To provide General Internal Medicine fellows with education and training in clinical research methods, focusing on vulnerable populations and urban health.
  2. To provide fellows with experiential learning in research implementation.
  3. To prepare fellows for successful careers in academic medicine as clinician investigators.

Research Education & Training

  1. Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University - The CRTP is a two-year program consisting of a didactic curriculum and a mentored research experience leading to a Master of Science Degree in Clinical Research Methods. The CRTP is funded by the NIH and Einstein.
  2. Weekly Research-in-Progress Meetings – Fellows present their research projects (at inception and completion) and receive critical review from peers and faculty. In addition, fellows critically review others’ research projects.
  3. Affinity Group Meetings – Fellows present various aspects of their ongoing research projects (e.g. research protocols, data collection instruments, manuscripts) for critical review by their peers and faculty. Additionally, fellows provide similar critical review of others’ work.

    Affinity Groups include:
    • Substance Abuse (weekly)
    • HIV (weekly)
    • Quality and Comparative Effectiveness (monthly)
    • Medical Education (monthly)

  4. Career Development Seminars – Career Development Seminars occur every 2 weeks and focus on topics related to developing a career as a clinician investigator. Seminars focus on topics such as: negotiating a job, giving a job talk, mentoring up, securing funding, writing an abstract, presenting an abstract, presenting a poster, writing a CV, attending a national conference, careers in academic medicine.

Research Implementation

General internal medicine fellows work closely with mentors inside and outside of Einstein and Montefiore to develop and implement research projects. Fellows are provided with seed funding for research projects and have opportunities to apply for small pilot/micro grants from several of Einstein’s NIH-designated Centers for Research, including the Center for AIDS Research, Diabetes Research Center, and Institute for Clinical and Translational Research. GIM fellows are expected to conduct at least one hypothesis-driven research project, with findings presented at a national conference and submitted to a peer-reviewed journal.

Clinical Care and Content Expertise

General Medicine fellows provide direct primary care one day per week in one of Montefiore Einstein's clinical sites. Potential sites of clinical care include federally qualified community health centers, hospital-based clinics, substance abuse treatment programs, homeless shelters, or hospital-based care.

Clinical/Content Seminars: Depending on interests, GIM fellows have the opportunity to participate in conferences and seminars that focus on their research content areas. A wide variety of these conferences regularly occur at Einstein and Montefiore.
