MINUTES OF SENATE COUNCIL MEETING

PRESENT: Drs. Allen Spiegel, Jeffrey Segall, Stephen Baum, Ed Burns, Elyse Sussman, Barbara Birshtein, Michael Brenowitz, Anne Bresnick, Hannes Buelow, Harris Goldstein, Ulrich Kadolsky, Vinayaka Prasad, Victor Schuster, Pamela Stanley, Mr. Cary Weiss

Jackie Irby was introduced as Dr. Spiegel’s new administrator dealing with Senate Council items. There will only be one Senate Council meeting in September and October due to scheduling constraints. There will be the opening of a new building funded by HHMI in South Africa focused on TB and HIV research that has strong Einstein contributions.

The members of the Institute for Aging Research have been recognized recently for their research contributions.

A total of 4 faculty members - Robert Kaplan, Chaim Putterman, Kamran Khodakhah and Sun-Ru Yeh were approved for tenure.

Possible topics for future Senate council meetings were raised, including: 1) the new graduate curriculum (fall 2013 for implementation), 2) updates on MD curriculum and training sites, 3) training grant development and programs, 4) graduate student recruitment and thesis defense requirements, 5) growing the global health research capacity, 6) issue of MD student placement in residencies and reorganization of office of student affairs, 7) improvement of public spaces to stimulate faculty interactions, 8) resources for postdocs (whether postdocs can attend courses), 9) ITS, 10) integration of new clinical science and basic research centers.

Einstein will be hosting a meeting in November on growing global health centers.

The meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m.
