Dr. Harris Goldstein, Associate Dean for Finances and Administration, provided a status update on the Shared Facilities and Cores.

Overview

• A catalogue on the Shared Facilities and Cores was recently distributed https://www.einstein.yu.edu/docs/research/shared-facilities/einstein-shared-facilities-and-cores-catalog.pdf
• $13 million per year is billed
• 75% of the institutional support went to 14 cores in 2016

Major Initiatives

• Ilab Core Facility Management Software (100K savings annually)
• Service Contracts – underwriters (150K savings annually)
• Reduction in core staff ($1 million savings annually)
• Closure of underutilized cores (500K savings annually)
• Adding new cores
• Submitting Shared Instrument Grants
• Recycling equipment from labs of investigators who have left Einstein

Centralized Financial Oversight

• Monthly review of all cores/budget/use
• Meeting with core directors 1-2 times/year
• Usage reports to analyze what is worth supporting

Future Plans

• Institutional support plays a major role in renewals of center funding
• Increase shared instrumentation grants
• Expand user base outside of Einstein
