MINUTES OF SENATE COUNCIL MEETING

Monday June 11, 2018

PRESENT: Drs. Allen Spiegel, Jeffrey Segall, Elyse Sussman, Robbie Burk, Johanna Daily, Meredith Hawkins, Nadine Katz, Ellie Schoenbaum

EXCUSED: Drs. John Blanchard, Chandan Guha, Myles Akabas, Elizabeth Kitsis, Courney Niland, Mx Logan Hughes-Hogan

This was a special meeting called for by a motion from the Senate to consider the email sent by the Speaker to Mr. Roger Einiger and Dr. Steve Safyer. Dr. Spiegel provided information and suggestions and then excused himself. The ensuing discussion led to three general conclusions:

  1. The process by which the Speaker delivers the annual report to the board should be formalized; i.e., the presentation should be approved by the Senate and/or Senate Council prior to presentation to the Board.
  2. The group decided that the Speaker should send a brief email to Mr. Einiger and Dr. Safyer indicating that the comments he made were his own concerns based on discussions with faculty.
    3. It would be worthwhile for the Senate/Senate Council to consider the complexities of clinical chair appointments with the overlapping roles involving clinical service, research and teaching. This will be something for discussion at future meetings.
