Einstein Senate

Senate Meeting: Saturday, January 7, 2023

Dr. Tomaselli gave the Dean’s report, providing updates on the upcoming LCME and cancer center site visits; ongoing recruiting for several dean positions; and NIH data sharing and management activities. He also recommended that faculty members review and respond to potential changes to NIH grant evaluation criteria.

Dr. Arnsten gave a brief Speaker’s report, updating the Senate on the recent elections for the 2023 Senate Council and the latest meetings of the Senate Council and the Board.

Sarah Brooks from Russell Reynolds, which is managing the search for the new dean, attended the meeting with some of her colleagues. She asked for input from the faculty regarding three questions: (1) what important strategic objectives or needs the new dean of Einstein would need to address, (2) what skills, characteristics, or experiences the faculty would like to see in the next dean, and (3) what is special and unique about Einstein that might draw a prospective dean to the institution.

Multiple responses were received, including from Jacqueline Achkar, Myles Akabas, Louis Weiss, and Victor Schuster. Key points included:

  • The value of Einstein’s diversity and location in a predominantly minority community, as well as the collaborative atmosphere and strong culture.
  • The desire for a dean who has a significant reputation as a scientist; fundraising skill and creativity; and the ability to work effectively with Montefiore and within a complex healthcare system.
  • The recent development of the cancer center was put forward as an example of how an institution can be revitalized by drawing on the commitment and strengths of the Einstein community.

Dr. Nosanchuk gave a brief update on COVID and influenza trends and highlighted the continuing vaccine clinics.

Neil Kaplan reported on the work of the Quality-of-Life Committee and the results of the survey that was conducted in April 2022. For many of the questions, the numbers remained largely static. In addition, improvements were made in several areas after the survey, which may have increased the percentages. The full slides are available online.

Shailesh Shenoy gave an update on IT, including the data sharing and management policy and the roll out of wireless and conference technology upgrades across the Einstein campus. He also answered questions regarding the availability and enabling of encrypted devices.

There was no additional new or old business at this meeting.
