Einstein Senate

Senate Meeting: Wednesday, July 5, 2023

• Dr. Tomaselli gave the Dean’s Report since this was his last Senate meeting. He discussed the preliminary findings of the LCME report based on the January 2023 site visit and took questions.

• Dr. Arnsten gave the Speaker’s Report and she asked Dr. Andrew Racine, Dr. Richard Stanley, and Dr. Robert Marion to offer tributes to Dr. Tomaselli and his contributions to Einstein. The whole Senate thanked Dr. Tomaselli for everything he brought to the institution during his tenure.

• Dr. Arnsten also provided updates on the recent Senate Council meetings and indicated there will be upcoming Senate discussions related to the exodus of senior female faculty members and the extension of the backup childcare benefits.

• Dr. Burns introduced potential new promotions criteria related to DEI and QI. These would be supplementary criteria that would help faculty working in these areas when they come up for promotion but would not hurt those who do not. After discussion, it was decided that the criteria would be sent out for review via email and the Senate would vote on them via online survey rather than holding a vote during the meeting.

• Dr. Diaz-Griffero, on behalf of the Committee on Committees, reported that the Fiscal Affairs Committee is working with legal counsel to determine how the salary distribution information can be shared. He also brought to the Senate’s attention concerns regarding remote management software installed on some Einstein computers due to NIH requirements. (What is needed to be compliant with NIH will be further discussed in future meetings.) Shailesh Shenoy clarified how this tool will actually be used and indicated that he will send out more information on this issue.

• There was no additional new or old business at this meeting.
