ALBERT EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
MINUTES OF SENATE COUNCIL MEETING
WED JUNE 3, 2020
FINAL
PRESENT: Drs. Gordon Tomaselli, Ed Burns
VIA ZOOM: Drs., Julia Arnsten, Jonathan Lai, Myles Akabas, Anita Autry-Dixon, Jonathan Alpert, Nerys Benfield, Anne Bresnick, Robbie Burk, Jill Crandall, Johanna Daily, Matthew Gamble, Chandan Guha, Tanya Johns, Elizabeth Kitsis, Susan Klugman, Allison Ludwig, Victor Schuster, Pamela Stanley; Mr. Ryan Graff, Ms. Shelly Motzkin
- Meeting minutes from the May 20, 2020 Senate Council were discussed and revised.
- The on-going reopening of Einstein regular operations was discussed, including procedures such as temperature screening and transition to phase II reopening.
- There was a discussion of campus events related to George Floyd and Black Lives Matter movements, including a moment of solidarity tribute scheduled for Jun 5.
- The Council resumed discussion of current procedures for Einstein staff to report on issues of discrimination and bias. While a single Title IX Coordinator designee has been appointed (Dr. Benfield), as per federal law, there would be benefits to have a broader committee, appointed by the Dean, to review any complaints. A committee could include representatives with a diverse expertise (for e.g., legal). Furthermore, a broad committee might reduce underreporting because plaintiffs can discuss issues with any of the committee members individually. With a single reporting conduit, plaintiffs may not report issues if they are not comfortable or aren’t familiar with those in the reporting chain. Formation of a committee to address issues of bias and discrimination, which would serve Einstein faculty and students, was proposed and approved. Dean Tomaselli requested nominations for membership as well as charge of the committee to begin appointments. 1099 employees have a separate mechanism for these issues and that remains.
The meeting adjourned at 3:59 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jonathan Lai, Ph.D.
Vice Speaker, Einstein Senate
