The February minutes were approved.
Dean’s Report
Dean Allen Spiegel thanked faculty members Josh Nosanchuk and Belinda Ostrowsky for their service to the National Board of Medical Examiners. The members of Einstein’s Conflict of Interest Committee, chaired by Michael Reichgott, were also acknowledged for their efforts. The Dean announced that Einstein’s commencement would be held at 6 PM on May 30, 2012 at Avery Fisher Hall, and that Margaret Hamburg, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, would be the commencement speaker.
Speaker’s Report
Senate Speaker Jeff Segall announced that a subcommittee of the Senate Council was soliciting thoughts regarding the use of professional grant writers to aid in the preparation of large applications, such as program project grants. The subcommittee is composed of Jeff Segall, Barbara Birshtein, and Vinayaka Prasad. The Speaker also noted that the next board meeting would take place in May at Einstein.
Committee on Committees
Vinayaka Prasad, Chair of the Committee on Committees, informed the Senate that there was nothing to report.
Ed Burns: Proposed New Einstein Academic Track for Appointments and Promotions
Ed Burns, Executive Dean, presented a new faculty track, the research professor track, for discussion and consideration. This non-tenure track is primarily designed for full-time research faculty who play vital research roles but who are not principal investigators. The Senate unanimously approved the creation of this new faculty track.
