Overview

The Ruth L. and David S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell Research and Regenerative Medicine was created in 2010 following a large philanthropic gift from the Gottesman family to provide individual investigators and multidisciplinary teams with the resources needed to realize the promise of this then rapidly emerging field. As we continue to honor the life and legacy of Paul S. Frenette, MD, founding director of the SCI, the institute is currently led by interim director Ulrich Steidl, MD, PhD. The institute has grown significantly over the last thirteen years—from eighteen faculty members in 2010 to thirty-nine faculty members and $37 million in total extramural funding in 2023. The Institute is known for its world-class science, highly collaborative atmosphere and cohesiveness across a diverse spectrum of areas of stem cell research, as well as its exceptional training and mentoring environment for students, postdocs, and junior faculty.

Our Stem Cell Institute is currently home to 36 laboratories from 17 departments, including >150 trainees at various levels (~70 postgraduate, ~60 graduate (PhD, MD, MD/PhD) students, ~30 undergraduate trainees).
