Senate Meeting: Wednesday, September 6, 2017

After approval of the Minutes, Dr. Allen Spiegel gave his Dean’s report. The first item discussed was a Dean’s letter describing Einstein’s progress towards independent degree granting, changes in medical and graduate student education programs, new academic leadership, new research recruits, and the Dean transition. Next, the Dean announced that we have received AALAC accreditation for Einstein’s laboratory animal program.

Dr. Spiegel discussed ways the Einstein community can help on an individual basis Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. In addition, the possible impact that the hurricane and the resulting unexpected political dynamics may have on the NIH budget was examined.

A diversity and inclusion committee strategic plan has been developed and will be presented at a later time. Related to this, three Einstein medical students are impacted by the recent changes in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) policy, and the administration is taking steps to try to protect their interests.

Dr. Jeffrey Segall, in his Speaker’ report, reminded the audience of two September events: a discussion with House Representative Crowley, and the Constitution Celebration Day lecture. Next, he introduced the new Senators to the mechanisms of the Einstein Senate, its website, and its records. A vacancy for the position of Secretary was announced, as well as the upcoming election of the Senate officers.

Dr. Ed Burns, Executive Dean, gave a presentation on the progress towards independent degree granting. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education requested a policy on academic freedom, and Dr. Burns proposed we adopt the American Association of University Professors policy created in 1940. The Senate unanimously voted to adopt such policy. Next, the same regulatory body requested a mission statement. Dr. Burns presented a recently developed statement centered on Einstein’s goal to support and nurture our students and to provide an exceptional environment supporting basic and clinical research.
