The Department of Medicine is the largest clinical department at Montefiore Medical Center, the principal teaching affiliate of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Internal Medicine admissions account for over half of all admissions to the hospital and for most of the recent growth in the Medical Center's patient care volume.

Montefiore is a 745-bed voluntary hospital which serves both as a tertiary care center and a community hospital. Montefiore is one of New York's largest medical centers with more than one million ambulatory care visits, 52,000 inpatient admissions, long-term care facilities, and a home health agency that provides more than 300,000 visits annually. Montefiore provides almost 20% of all inpatient care and 30% of all tertiary care in the Bronx, and serves patients referred from the metropolitan area, the state and the nation.

Montefiore has a strong national reputation, recently ranking high in the U.S. "Leapfrog" indices of quality of care and among all U.S. hospitals for investments in medical innovation and technology.

Montefiore has two major inpatient divisions with a total of over 1000 beds. The main Einstein site, including Weiler Hospital ("East Campus"), serves as the center for most of the laboratory research activity. Montefiore's Moses Hospital ("West Campus") hosts the bulk of the patient care and clinical research activity. In July 2008, Montefiore added the North Divsiion, expanding access for patients in the northeast Bronx to the resources of Montefiore's extensive healthcare delivery system.

A Partnership of Excellence in Training the Next Generation

Montefiore Medical Center serves as the clinical training site for Albert Einstein's outstanding, collaborative bi-campus medical education programs for fellows, residents, interns, and medical students. Postdoctoral fellows conduct basic science research, clinical research, clinical care, and clinical and investigative training at both campuses.

There are over 60 residency training programs at Montefiore, and over 900 residents. The Einstein Internal Medicine Residency, the largest of these training programs, has over 150 residents in its three-year program. Montefiore has met accreditation standards set by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and the Council of Teaching Hospitals of the American Association of Medical Colleges (and received their prestigious Outstanding Community Service Award in 1996).

Einstein's residency programs are organized into a system of three "firms." Entering interns are assigned to a firm and remain with that unit for all 3 years, led by the same firm chief and assistant firm chief. Two of the firms have clinics on the West Campus, with a third at Montefiore's Comprehensive Family Care Clinic on the East Campus.

Faculty in Practice

Many Department of Medicine faculty members are practicing physicians at Montefiore, providing critically examined patient care informed by research and treating major illnesses related to the Department's academic medical divisions.

The attending staff is made up of over 400 full-time faculty members of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, as well as more than 600 voluntary staff members.
