Dr. Knowles received his doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree from New York Medical College. He then attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center for residency training in psychiatry. There, he served as the chief resident of Bronx Psychiatric Center, an intermediate-term inpatient psychiatric hospital for those with severe mental illness. Shortly following residency, Dr. Knowles became board certified in psychiatry under the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
After residency, Dr. Knowles joined the faculty in Montefiore's Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences. During his 8 years at Montefiore, he worked on the acute inpatient unit followed by the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Division (AOPD). While in the AOPD, Dr. Knowles served as the Medical Director, overseeing an outpatient clinic comprised of 60 staff members and 1,700 patients. He has significant experience working with patients with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, and other psychotic disorders, which helped him earn the position of Program Director of OnTrackNY, a first-episode psychosis program. Dr. Knowles also has extensive experience treating depressive, anxiety, bipolar, and attention-deficit disorders.
Dr. Knowles is an assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the medical school for Montefiore Medical Center. He has served as chair of the Clinical Competency Committee and as a member of the Quality Improvement Committee, Program Education Committee, Steering Committee, Program Leaders Committee, and Adult Residency Training Executive Committee within the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.
