Montefiore Medical Center

The Montefiore Medical Center consists of three institutions: The Henry and Lucy Moses Division, which comprises the 765 bed Montefiore Hospital on the west campus, the Weiler Division, consisting of the 431 bed Jack D. Weiler Hospital on the east campus and the North Division consisting of 369 inpatient beds.

The Weiler Division

The Weiler Hospital, the east campus of Montefiore Medical Center, is a voluntary hospital that provides general obstetric and gynecologic inpatient care, with Dr. Cynthia Chazotte serving as the Chief of Obstetrics and Perinatology. The newly re-designed perinatal facilities at Weiler Hospital contain 10 LDR suites, 3 operating rooms, a 42 bed antepartum/postpartum unit, a neonatal intensive care unit, and 2 special care obstetric intensive care rooms. Weiler provides services for 4,800 births annually. All providers of Ob/Gyn care at the Weiler Division are either full time or voluntary faculty in the Department of Ob/Gyn and Women's Health. The Weiler Division is the site of the Maternal Fetal Assessment Center, where complete antenatal testing is provided by the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine faculty, assisted by nurse specialists. In addition, Weiler is the site of a large inpatient gynecologic oncology service, which cares for women with reproductive tract malignancies. Dr. Gary L. Goldberg is the Division Director of Gynecologic Oncology.

Dr. Erika Banks is the Director of Gynecology at the Weiler Hospital. Services offered include both major and minor (minimally invasive) gynecologic surgeries such as hysterectomies, myomectomies (surgeries for uterine bleeding, fibriods), ovarian cystectomies, oophorectomies, hysteroscopies, laparoscopies, endometrial ablations, incontinence surgeries, and surgeries for pelvic relaxation/prolapse.

The Moses Division

The Moses Division of Montefiore Medical Center is located in the west Bronx. All providers of gynecologic services are faculty in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's Health. Dr. Mark Levie is the Director of Gynecology as well as the Gynecologic Director of the Montefiore Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS). This center was opened in 2001, and is a state-of- the-art training facility with laparoscopic virtual reality simulators, suturing boxes, robotics, and animate lab. The Institute has been designated as a regional training center by Gynecare Worldwide (Division of Ethicon, Inc.), and Dr. Levie runs training courses for physicians within the region on advanced endoscopic and hysteroscopic techniques. More recently, Dr. Levie has been working with Conceptus, Inc. and was an investigator in their post FDA trial, and also worked with Olympus and Kael Storz to develop training videos for the Essure™ system. Montefiore has been designated as an Essure™ training facility.

The Wakefield Division

The Wakefield Division of Montefiore Medical Center (formerly Our Lady of Mercy Medical Center) includes 369 inpatient beds, 2,500 employees, 7 operating rooms, and 500 physicians. The Women's Center at the Wakefield Division of Montefiore Medical Center opened its doors on July 23, 2008. In October 2008, several providers from the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health’s Jack D. Weiler Division began bringing patients to the Wakefield Division for obstetrical and gynecologic services. We look forward to introducing additional specialty services at this site. Dr. David Smotkin currently runs the gynecologic oncology clinic, and Dr. Kafui DeMasio is the Medical Director of PCAP (the Prenatal Care Assistance Program).

The Municipal Hospital Affiliations

The North Bronx Health Network: Jacobi Medical Center  

The Jacobi Medical Center (about 700 beds) is part of the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation. Jacobi has been a major focus of clinical and educational activity for the department since its inception. There are several buildings within Jacobi utilized by the department for clinical programs and research. All inpatient and outpatient obstetric and gynecologic services at Jacobi are provided by department faculty. Three thousand five hundred births occur annually at the Jacobi Medical Center, which contains a 44 bed maternity unit, an antepartum high risk Testing Unit, and a labor and delivery suite with five labor rooms and four delivery rooms. A 20 bed neonatal intensive care unit is on the same floor as the labor and delivery suite.  Michael Zinaman, MD is the Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Ann Gibeau, PhD, CNM, the Director of Midwifery.

Within Jacobi is the Women's Health Center, which provides primary reproductive ambulatory health care for women. This model public hospital unit features a team approach to care by which physicians, certified nurse midwives, nutritionists, nurse practitioners, social workers and registered nurses cooperate in an interdisciplinary setting, providing continuity of care. Many specialty programs have individual clinics, including sessions that focus on diabetes in pregnancy, high risk obstetrics, preconceptional care, menopause, reproductive endocrinology, infertility, family planning, and colposcopy services. The Women's Health Center is an approved PCAP/Medicaid site.

 

The North Bronx Health Network: North Central Bronx Hospital

North Central Bronx Hospital (approximately 345 beds) is a tertiary hospital which is a part of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation and a part of the North Bronx Health Network. Physician providers of care at this site are members of the faculty of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, who work closely with a large cadre of nurse midwives. Approximately 1800 births occur annually. The service includes a 36 bed maternity unit, an antepartum testing unit, and a labor and delivery suite with an LDRP, and a 16 bed NICU. Susan Papera, CNM, is the Director of Midwifery, and Michael Zinaman, MD is the Chair, Obstetrics and Gynecology.

North Central Bronx is also the site of outpatient obstetrical and gynecological services. Attending physician consultation and supervision is available 24 hours/day. Comprehensive multidisciplinary care includes care by certified nurse midwives, registered nurses, social workers, nutritionists, and HIV counselors in this PCAP/Medicaid approved site.
