Purpose
To provide structure for the resident interested in global women’s health; guiding and preparing the resident for a future career as an obstetrician-gynecologist with global health (GH) expertise.
Main components of the program
- General medicine elective in Kisoro, Uganda (opportunity dependent on academic standing and time/schedule availability within the residency program that particular year)
- Attendance at GH Infectious Disease seminars if going to Uganda for medicine elective
- Completion of online seminars on main Global Women’s Health (GWH) issues
- Read a minimum of 4 books from GH book list with written reflections on major topics covered in the book
- Watch at least 4 movies from GH movie list – group viewings will be held twice a year
- Attendance at 4 GH book/movie discussion sessions
- Journal club attendance 4 times per academic year – will be held at 6pm on the last Monday evening of each month
- Provide one lecture at resident’s school
- Completion of outlined GH competencies – assessed by written, oral, and clinical testing
- Completion of on-site global health project – service or research oriented
a. With Faculty mentor and medical student mentee
- Attendance and/or presentation at one international conference
Overview of Yearly Objectives
PGY 1
- General medicine elective in Kisoro, Uganda – will satisfy ACGME requirements for medicine elective during intern year (see stipulations above)
- Attendance at GH Infectious Disease seminars prior to departure to Uganda (see stipulations above)
- Read one book from GH book list
- Watch one movie from GH movie list
- Attend one GH book/movie discussion session
- Journal club attendance 4 times per academic year
PGY 2
- First half of the year
- Begin online GWH tutorials
- Begin reading one book from GH book list
- Watch one movie from GH movie list
- Attend one GH book/movie discussion session
- Second half of the year (will have a selective rotation during this time)
- Choose Faculty mentor
- Formulate idea for service/research project
- Begin process of IRB application, as necessary
- Watch one movie from GH movie list if not done during first half of the year
- Attend one GH book/movie discussion session if not done during first half of the year
PGY 3
- Complete online GWH tutorial
- Read one book from GH book list
- Watch one movie from GH movie list
- Attend one GH book/movie discussion session
- Provide one resident school lecture on a GWH topic of choice
- January or February - Implement 4 week service/research project in the field with Faculty mentor oversight and medical student mentee assistance
PGY 4
- Read one book from GH book list
- Watch one movie from GH movie list
- Attend one GH book/movie discussion session
- Complete service/research project – write-up of manuscript and/or return to project site as needed
- Attend international conference*
