Albert Einstein College of Medicine ensures M.D. students, Ph.D. students, and postdoctoral fellows learn in an ethical and humanistic environment that fosters collegiality. We understand that interpersonal interactions shape effective and meaningful educational experiences and encourage ethical, respectful, humanistic, and caring behavior among students, postdocs, faculty, and clinical and research staff. We understand that despite our best efforts, instances of bias and mistreatment may still happen. 

Einstein is committed to maintaining a safe and supportive academic environment that is free of all mistreatment, including intimidation, disrespect, belittlement, humiliation, and abuse. We have adopted a policy of zero tolerance regarding the mistreatment of students, trainees, and postdoctoral fellows and ensure that those responsible for mistreatment receive disciplinary or other appropriate corrective action.

How to Report Mistreatment

The Einstein Learning Environment Committee (ELEC) provides a neutral, confidential, and informal space for M.D. students, graduate students in the biomedical sciences, and postdoctoral fellows to voice concerns and complaints that arise about the learning environment at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, including interactions with teachers, clinical and laboratory staff, and peers. The committee investigates all reports of mistreatment. If you report an incident, you can feel confident that your concerns will be kept anonymous or confidential based upon your preference and will be thoroughly investigated without fear of retaliation. All reported instances of mistreatment are kept confidential and are fully investigated. You have the option to indicate if you wish to delay an investigation for any reason.

Incidents of discrimination or harassment based on race, religion, color, creed, or age; national origin or ancestry; sex; marital status; sexual orientation; gender identity and expression; physical or mental disability; veteran or disabled veteran status; military status; pregnancy status; genetic predisposition/carrier status; citizenship status; familial status; domestic violence victim status; criminal conviction; or any other personal characteristic protected under applicable federal, state or local law, are governed by Einstein’s Title IX Gender-Based Misconduct, Discrimination, and Harassment Policy and the Discrimination and Harassment Policy (Non-Title IX) and should be reported according to those policies.

Anonymously and confidentially report bias, mistreatment, discrimination, and harassment using the EthicsPoint website, a secure and confidential third-party reporting tool. 

Reporting to State Agencies and Accreditors

If you’ve filed a complaint about bias or mistreatment at Einstein that has not been resolved through the ombuds committee, discussion with representatives from internal offices at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, or a formal investigation initiated via the third-party hotline, you may report the incident to state agencies and external regulatory bodies, including the New York State Education Department and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
