Research Retreat 2019

The Montefiore Einstein Pathology Department held its annual Research Retreat on June 4, 2019, at Marina del Rey in the Bronx.

This year’s poster session featured an impressive array of basic and clinical research projects by pre- and postdoctoral fellows from Einstein as well as residents and fellows from Montefiore. Viewing and judging of the posters by senior faculty members from the research and clinical sides of the department extended through early afternoon.

A highlight of the morning session were oral presentations by:

  • Cara Reynolds, a PhD candidate in Dr. Fernando Macian Juan's Lab
  • Juwen DuBois, a postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Dr. Bridget Shafrit-Zagardo
  • Rosiris Leon Rivera, an MSTP candidate in Dr. Joan Berman's Lab

After lunch, attendees heard oral presentations by four Montefiore residents:

  • Sophie Cameron, MD, (Mentor: Dr. Morayma Reyes Gil)
  • Mohammad Brouqua, MD, representing Roger Fecher, MD, PGY1 (Mentor: Dr. Morayma Reyes Gil)
  • Xi Zhang, MD, (Mentor: Dr. Yanhua Wang)
  • Kenji Ikemura, MD, (Mentor: Dr. Susan Fineberg).

The day culminated in a lecture by student-invited guest speaker Ana Rodriguez, PhD, professor of Microbiology at the New York University School of Medicine, on her research into “Malaria Pathogenesis: Anemia and Cerebral Malaria.”

The winners of the poster session were:

  • For Basic Science Research:
Tonya Aaron, MD/PhD, the laboratory of David R. Fooksman, PhD.
  • For Clinical Research:
Ridin Balakrishnan, MD, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
