Admissions

So you have checked out the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Einstein), and you are interested in applying. We are happy to hear that!

MSTP applicants are expected to have a strong background in science and extensive laboratory or clinical research experience. Over the past three years, the matriculating students have had an average undergraduate GPA of 3.66 with a range of GPAs from 2.9 to 4.0. The average total MCAT score for matriculating students over the past three years has been 512 with a range from 499 to 523. As you can see from the range of GPAs and MCAT scores, we evaluate applicants holistically. We do not use numerical cutoffs in the screening process because they are not predictive of outcomes consistent with the goals of MD-PhD training programs. Resilience is an important characteristic. We encourage applicants to use the AMCAS application and the Einstein secondary application essays to describe the challenges they have faced, how they have impacted their lives, and how they have overcome them. We also encourage applicants to use the final secondary application essay to explain why they are interested in training at Einstein. Each application will be reviewed by a member of the Admissions Committee in its entirety to make decisions regarding whom to interview.

Applicants with undergraduate majors in biological and physical sciences, computer science, mathematics or engineering are encouraged to apply. All applicants should have completed, or will complete by the time of matriculation, the normal prerequisites for admission to the medical school. In addition, most MSTP applicants will have completed advanced coursework in the sciences and mathematics through calculus. If you are interested in applying, go to the Einstein MSTP Application.

We welcome applications from all individuals. Einstein seeks to create a safe and supportive community where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. Einstein has a longstanding commitment to providing outstanding, state of the art, compassionate care to the Bronx community that we serve. In his 1951 letter agreeing to allow the newly formed College of Medicine to be named in his honor, Professor Albert Einstein stated, "...it will welcome students of all creeds and races." We continue to uphold Professor Einstein's vision for the role of the medical school and of science to make the world a better place for everyone.

Disabilities

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply. College facilities are accessible to individuals with disabilities. The College and the MSTP will make reasonable accommodations to ensure that all students can fulfill their full potential. The medical school website provides information regarding resources and accommodations. Confidential inquiries about accommodations can be made to Dr. Michelle Blackmore, Director of the Office of Academic Support and Counseling. Information about technical standards established by the Licensing Committee on Medical Education is available online. Several current MSTP students have disabilities, both apparent and non-apparent, and are flourishing in the program.

International Students

The Einstein MSTP only accepts applications from individuals who are US citizens, or people with permanent residence. Applicants who are international students are NOT eligible to apply.

Application Information

All application materials must be received by December 1. AMCAS application must be submitted by November 1 and transcripts must be submitted to AMCAS by November 15. Be sure to comply with all application deadlines. Early submission and completion of your application is recommended because we have a rolling admissions process.

All interviews will be conducted via Zoom. There will be an in-person Revisit for accepted applicants in late March.

Although most MSTP applicants enter the MSTP program directly as first year students, we also have the Alternate Pathway. First and second year Einstein M.D. and Ph.D. students who are interested in the MSTP may apply for admission to the program. Each year we receive several Alternate Pathway Program applications and some students are admitted to the MSTP via this route.

Please feel free to e-mail us at mstp@einsteinmed.edu with any questions!
