Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP)

Application

MSTP Application Process

Step 1

Complete the AMCAS application. Be sure to mark the MD-PhD dual-degree check box on the AMCAS application website and complete the three essays, 1) your Personal Statement, 2) MD/PhD Essay and 3) Scientific Research Experience. Submit your transcripts and MCAT scores to the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). The latest date for submission of the AMCAS application is November 1. The deadline for submitting transcripts to AMCAS is November 15. The AMCAS site opens in May. You can start to submit your application in early June. Complete these steps as early as possible because it increases your chances of obtaining an interview. For admission to the class entering in June 2025, the earliest acceptable MCAT score would be after April 2021. The latest MCAT exam score we will accept will be exams taken in September 2024.

Step 2

MSTP applicants must submit two confidential letters of reference from past research mentors. If you have only worked in one laboratory, then indicate this on the Secondary application where we ask you to identify the names of your past research mentor references. These must be submitted through the AMCAS Letter Writer system.

Step 3

Following completion of your AMCAS application the Einstein Admissions Office will send you an email with instructions to complete the online Einstein MD/MSTP Secondary. Complete the Secondary application.

All application materials must be received by the admissions office by December 1. Early submission is strongly recommended because we have a rolling admissions process.

Diversity: The Einstein MSTP welcomes applications from individuals from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in medicine and biomedical research. Currently, 24% of Einstein MSTP students are from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in medicine and biomedical research. Information is available about the activities and resources of the Einstein Office of Diversity Enhancement. Individuals with disabilities are also encouraged to apply. Reasonable accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities but all accepted applicants must be able to meet the technical standards established by the Licensing Committee on Medical Education. Several current students have disabilities. Questions about accommodations should be addressed to the Office of Academic Support and Counseling.

Contacts for Questions: If you have any questions, please contact the MSTP office at (718) 430-2129 or e-mail Maria Cuesta, MSTP Admissions Program Coordinator, at maria.alamo@einsteinmed.edu.

If you have questions regarding the Einstein MD/MSTP Secondary Application or application to the medical school alone you may contact Ms. Noreen Kerrigan, Associate Dean for Admissions, at noreen.kerrigan@einsteinmed.edu.

Application Review - Interview Process

Completed applications are reviewed by the MSTP Steering Committee as they are received. As such, it is essential that the Einstein MD/MSTP Secondary Application and letters of recommendation be submitted without delay. Those applicants whose training and performance qualify them for further consideration are invited to visit Einstein for an interview. The interview day begins with breakfast followed by a meeting with the program director. The rest of the day consists of two formal interviews with members of the Steering Committee and a series of informal meetings with faculty of the applicant’s choice. Applicants have lunch with current MSTP students during the interview day. Hotel accommodations are provided for the night before the interview. The evening before the interviews, applicants are invited to an informal dinner with current MSTP students and to a social held after dinner at a current student’s apartment.

The MSTP Steering Committee meets periodically throughout the year to discuss and rank the applicants who have been interviewed. Acceptances are offered on a rolling basis starting in December through mid-May. Although rare, some applicants may still be notified of acceptance in early June. Those applicants who are accepted by mid-March are invited to attend the revisit to get a second look at Einstein. Waitlisted applicants are reconsidered at each Steering Committee meeting. We enroll approximately 15 first-year students each year.

If you have any questions, please contact the MSTP office at (718) 430-2129 or e-mail Maria Cuesta, MSTP Program Coordinator, at maria.alamo@einsteinmed.edu.

Equal Opportunity/Non-Discrimination: All College decisions with regard to faculty, staff and students are based on equitable and equally applied standards of excellence. Diversity enhancement procedures have been established, both as a legal obligation under applicable law and as a visible and formal expression of institutional policy. This policy is designed to insure that recruitment, hiring, training, promotion, and all other personnel actions take place and all programs involving students, both academic and non-academic, are administered without regard to race, religion, creed, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, veteran or disabled veteran status, marital status, sexual orientation or citizenship status as those terms are used in the law. Reasonable accommodations will be made for applicants with disabilities but they must be able to meet the Technical Standards established by the Licensing Committee on Medical Education.
