Dr. Meredith Hawkins is a Beeson Scholar of the American Federation of Aging Research.
Dr. Hawkins’ current and future efforts involve the following:
- The complex relationship between free fatty acids and release of inflammatory mediators by adipose tissue macrophages (Am J. Physiol. 2007), and how this contributes to the metabolic syndrome of aging. The Hawkins laboratory has shown that free fatty acids inhibit glucose-stimulated reductions in hepatic glucose production (Diabetes 2006) inflammatory genes associated with insulin resistance in adipose-associated macrophages.
- The effects of Sirt1-activating drugs on insulin action and adipose tissue biology in middle-aged obese subjects.
