The New York State Department of Health has awarded Dr. Barry Zingman a five-year, $1.625 million grant to develop a new program to enhance linkage, retention, and viral suppression of HIV-infected persons at the Montefiore AIDS Center and the Center for Positive Living/ID Clinic.

Named the STAR Program (Suppressive Treatment, Adherence, and Retention), Dr. Zingman’s new team will supplement existing services to focus on patients with active HIV who are either in care but don't follow treatment, newly diagnosed, hospitalized for AIDS-related complications, or have fallen out of care.

Dr. Zingman is Professor of Clinical Medicine (Infectious Diseases) and Medical Director of the AIDS Center at Montefiore, the largest multidisciplinary and multispecialty adult HIV/AIDS program in New York State. His array of leadership roles includes Chair of the New York State Adult HIV Guidelines Committee and Vice-Chair of the NYS AIDS Institute's Quality of Care Advisory Committee.

“Thirty-five years into the AIDS epidemic, we have all the knowledge and treatments needed to make HIV/AIDS a long-term manageable illness, and even to prevent new cases, but there continue to be a significant minority of patients who are not yet fully benefiting from these advances. The STAR Program will be a key to better control the epidemic in our area, and a model for others nationally,” said Dr. Zingman.
