Epilepsy Fellowship

The Epilepsy Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine is an ACGME-accredited one-year program. Our mission is to develop, nurture and monitor the growth of epilepsy specialists capable of directing an Epilepsy Program and an EEG laboratory. This is aligned with Montefiore's mission to heal, to teach, to discover and to advance the health of the communities we serve.

The fellowship provides extensive epilepsy monitoring unit and outpatient epilepsy clinical exposure, as well as extensive experience with long-term EEG monitoring studies of critically ill patients. The fellow’s time is divided equally between the adult and pediatric services. Fellows participate in the interdisciplinary evaluation of patients for epilepsy surgery. Training emphasizes the integration of historical data, phase one EEG data, high-density EEG studies, neuropsychological information and MRI, SPECT and PET studies to develop surgical hypotheses and plan intracranial investigations and select of patients for resective surgery, thermoablation or neurostimulation. The fellows’ clinical experience includes intracarotid sodium amobarbital procedures (Wada tests), both sEEG and grid-strip phase 2 monitoring, electrocorticography and intra- and extra-operative functional mapping. Fellows learn to program responsive neurostimulation (RNS) and vagus nerve stimulators (VNS) in dedicated clinics. Fellows also learn to select patients for dietary treatment of epilepsy and collaborate with an epilepsy-trained nutritionist.

The programs’ didactics combine investigation of the processes that give rise to seizures and epilepsy, the neurophysiologic bases of the EEG, the medical and surgical management of epilepsy and the study of the consequences of epilepsy and its comorbidities. In addition to extensive training in all aspects of epilepsy and EEG, the fellowship provides at least two months of elective and research time tailored to the trainee’s interests and career goals. Training in intraoperative monitoring and electives in sleep medicine are available for interested fellows.

The fellowship training takes place in the context of the clinical work of a department and institution dedicated to improving the lives of those in our care. Fostering an academically minded, inquisitive work environment is a priority. Investigation of the literature is empathized throughout. Innovation and exploration are encouraged. All fellows participate in the department's QA processes. Fellows are encouraged to participate in the academic work of the department.

Applicants to the fellowship must have completed an accredited 3-year residency program in neurology or child neurology in the United States or Canada. Interested applicants can contact the program director by mail or email:
