Mission, Vision & Strategy
Mission
The Montefiore Einstein Department of Pathology’s mission is threefold:
- To deliver high-quality, patient-centered healthcare using state-of-the-art diagnostic procedures;
- To train pathologists to be integral members of healthcare teams and prepare them to meet current and future challenges to medicine and society;
- To contribute to the discovery of new scientific knowledge and translate it into the practice of pathology.
Vision
We continually strive to deliver the highest possible standard of care to patients in the Bronx and beyond through innovation and excellence in the areas of Pathology Education, Research and Diagnostic Medicine.
Strategy
We employ a three-pronged approach in actualizing our mission and vision:
- Integrating research, education, clinical care, and community health to advance the understanding of disease mechanisms;
- Applying new knowledge and best practices to diagnostic medicine;
- Developing educational programs that will produce medical scientists and clinicians who are well prepared to apply the techniques and procedures of pathology in collaborating with clinicians across all disciplines to improve individual and population health.
Innovative Education
The Montefiore Einstein Department of Pathology is a leader in medical, resident and graduate education. Our innovative educational programs are designed to prepare trainees to enter the workforce as fully functioning professionals and integral members of the healthcare team within the shortest possible timeframe. Mentorship, interactive, case-based learning and the development of effective communication skills are key components of our educational approach. Our graduates at all levels of training – both in clinical practice and research -- leave well prepared to embark upon satisfying and successful healthcare careers.
Cutting-edge Research
Our major research programs include: Cancer Biology & Genetics, Immunopathology, Infectious Disease and Diagnostic Pathology. Our faculty members receive substantial federal funding to conduct cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research into the mechanisms of disease. Trainees have ample opportunities to participate in research, to present at regional, national and international scientific meetings, and to hone their presentation skills at the Pathology Department’s annual research retreat.
State-of-the-Art Diagnostic Medicine
Our Clinical Pathology Laboratories, located across the Montefiore Einstein campuses, perform approximately 10 million tests annually, providing a wide range of services to healthcare sites throughout the Bronx and lower Westchester County, NY. These include acute care academic medical centers, large medical groups, schools, shelters, nursing homes, hospices, emergency departments and solo practitioners.
Our skilled laboratory teams use the most advanced laboratory instruments and protocols to render accurate diagnoses and ensure the best possible health outcomes for patients. While hospital-based clinical pathology laboratory technical staff typically report directly to hospital administrators, Montefiore’s organizational structure is unique: Our laboratory professionals operate within the Pathology Service Line, overseeing operations from order entry and specimen collection to test performance and results reporting.
Our laboratories are function as an integrated group, working in partnership with hospital administration. This makes for more efficient workflows and enhances our ability to achieve our ultimate shared goal: the optimal delivery of patient care.
