Residents are required to be graduates of an accredited psychiatric residency training program, at least the PG 5 level, and eligible for licensure in New York State. As per guidelines approved by the Association of Directors of Forensic Psychiatry Fellowships (ADFPF), we will begin reviewing applications for the 2025-2026 academic year starting on May 1, 2024, with interviews beginning on or after August 1, 2024. There are no additional application requirements other than those listed below. Application requirements include:
- Completion of the application form
- Photo
- Curriculum Vitae
- Personal statement of one single-spaced page or less that explains your interest and/or experience in forensic psychiatry
- At least one additional writing sample (e.g., de-identified forensic report or psychiatric evaluation, published manuscript of which you are the first author)
- Copy of Medical School Diploma
- Copy of the ECFMG certificate (if applicable)
- Copy of current medical license(s)
- Copy of USMLE/COMLEX scores
- Proof of citizenship and visa status (if applicable), such as birth certificate, passport, green card, etc.
- The following documents should be sent directly to the fellowship program from the source:
- Official copy of medical school transcript and Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE, formerly known as the dean’s letter)
- Three letters of reference, one of which must be from your current program director or, if you have completed training within the past five years, the director of
the program from which you graduated most recently

Residents with additional training in child and adolescent psychiatry are encouraged to apply.
Our program does accept candidates on J1 and H1B visas.
Program completion requires meeting the competency standards in each of the critical areas of forensic psychiatry. Competency standards and evaluation forms are distributed to fellows at the start of the fellowship year.
