Executive Dean

Marla J. Keller, M.D., became executive dean of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in July 2024. In this role she works closely with Yaron Tomer, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean and chief academic officer at Montefiore Einstein, and other senior leaders to drive strategic planning and provide guidance across all academic and research programs. Dr. Keller is responsible for supporting clinical, translational, and basic science research as well as educational and academic operations.

In her first year as executive dean, Dr. Keller participated in developing Einstein’s new strategic plan, recruiting two new department chairs and a center director, and establishing the new Data Science Institute. As the leader of Einstein’s research enterprise, she fosters new and interdisciplinary research initiatives and collaborations, and implements research regulations and policies. She works closely with department chairs and center directors to fund and spur new research and is responsible for strategically recruiting, retaining, and mentoring faculty. In collaboration with Einstein’s office of biotechnology and business development, Dr. Keller is working on expanding opportunities for scientific discoveries.

Prior to becoming executive dean, Dr. Keller served as vice chair of research in Einstein’s department of medicine, where she oversaw a robust research portfolio of more than 100 principal investigators. Under her tenure, research operations were streamlined and National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding increased significantly along with the number of clinical trials. Dr. Keller also served as PI of our NIH-funded Clinical and Translational Award and director of the Block Institute for Clinical and Translational Research.

Dr. Keller served as a member of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services panel on HIV treatment guidelines and on the NIH COVID-19 treatment guidelines panel, where she helped shape protocols at the national level. She is a fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America and a member of the HIV Medicine Association.

Dr. Keller earned her M.D. from NYU School of Medicine and trained in internal medicine at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. She was an infectious diseases fellow in the Beth Israel/Brigham and Women’s Hospital combined program. She was recruited to Montefiore Einstein in 2007 after spending nine years on the faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.
