Radioactive Material License Information
Obtaining a License:
The Principal Investigator wishing to work with radioactive material must submit a Radioactive Material License Application form along with a copy of their CV and a map of the laboratory (see below to obtain a copy of the application). Once the application has been completed, email the completed form to the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) or drop it off at the Environmental Health & Safety office located in Forchheimer 800. The RSO will review the form and forward it to Einstein’s Radiation Safety Committee if it is complete and accurate. The Committee members will review the application request and vote upon granting the license to the Principal Investigator or not. The approval may include conditions that the Principal Investigator uses additional precautions or that the Principal Investigator provide additional information. It is recommended to include as much detail as possible in the application to limit questions that the Committee may have. The Principal Investigator will be notified in writing regarding their application request.
The Principal Investigators Radioactive Materials License is good for 3 years, after which the RSO will notify the Principal Investigator that they must renew their license in order to continue use of material. The Principal Investigator will be asked if they wish to renew the license or terminate it. Even if the Principal Investigator is on "Inactive Status", they must renew an expired license. This ensures that if the Principal Investigator decides to once again use radioactive material, the license will be current.
Please note that not all laboratories are licensed for the same radioisotopes and quantities of material.
Amending a License:
The Principal Investigator may wish to change the conditions of their license, which may include the addition of a radioisotope, the increase in total limits for a radioisotope, or to add a laboratory or a new procedure. To amend the license, the Principal Investigator must complete an Amendment to Radioactive Material License Request Form and email it to the RSO or drop it off at the Environmental Health & Safety office located in Forchheimer 800 (see below to obtain a copy of the application). The RSO will review the amendment request and notify the Principal Investigator of its approval status or request additional information.
Inactive Status:
Should a Principal Investigator decide not to use radioactive material for an extended period of time, they may request that their license be placed on "Inactive Status". This means that the Principal Instigator will not obtain or use any radioactive material in their laboratory during that period. While on “Inactive Status” the Principal Investigator is not responsible for ensuring that routine wipe tests are conducted, and the Radiation Safety Officer will not conduct quarterly inspections of their laboratory.
If the Principal Investigator decides to reactivate their license, it is just a matter of sending the Radiation Safety Officer an email requesting their change in status. The RSO will then ensure that the laboratory is set up to be active once again.
