Training Program
Applicant eligibility
- Surgical Residents who have completed their second year of surgical residency
- Residents interested in research and willing to make a two-year commitment to research training
- Per NCI/NIH requirements, applicants must be US citizens, non-citizen nationals or permanent residents of the United States
Program requirements
The training program will consist of two years of intense laboratory research, formal coursework, journal clubs, seminars, and the Department of Surgery Annual Research Day.
Trainees spend two years working with their research mentor in basic and translational research which will ultimately lead to publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Twenty-five percent of the trainees time will be dedicated to our didactic curriculum.

- Design and Conduct of Clinical Research
- Cancer: A basic science approach
- Quantitative Skill for the Biomedical Researcher

- two letters of recommendation (one must be from your residency program director) addressed to Drs. Michler and Oktay
All application materials must be sent via email with "T32 Application" in the subject line All attachments should be PDF formatted.
Your personal statement (1-page limit) should describe: Your accomplishments and how they are indicative of your interest and indicative of potential success as a surgeon scientist. Your statement should also describe your career goals and how this program will help you fulfill those goals. You should also discuss your career plans after completion of this fellowship.
Letter from Program Director: Provide a signed letter on letterhead from your program director confirming that the applicant is in good standing with the residency program. Additionally, the program director should comment on the applicant's status (categorical or preliminary resident) with the program after completion of the T32 fellowship training.
