Accelerating Lupus Research — A $6 million National Institutes of Health award for studying autoimmune diseases will be divided among 11 U.S. research groups, one of which is led by Einstein scientist Dr. Chaim Putterman. The goal of the Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus Network is to develop new, non-invasive tools for early detection of severe autoimmune diseases such as arthritis and lupus, and to discover novel therapies. Dr. Putterman’s group, the New York City-based Multi-Ethnic Translational Research Optimization, or METRO, Lupus Consortium, teams Dr. Putterman with co-principal investigators at NYU School of Medicine and The Rockefeller University. The three collaborators currently treat a total of approximately 1,000 lupus patients of diverse ethnic/racial backgrounds. Dr. Putterman is professor of medicine and of microbiology & immunology; he is also chief of rheumatology in the department of medicine at Einstein and Montefiore Medical Center.
