Dr. Chaim Putterman

Limiting Effects of Lupus on the Brain — The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases has awarded Dr. Chaim Putterman a $2 million grant over five years to support his efforts to prevent central nervous system damage caused by lupus. Dr. Putterman and colleagues are investigating the potential role of an inflammatory mediator, known as TWEAK, found in high levels in the brains and spinal fluid of lupus patients. The Putterman team will examine lupus-prone mice to determine whether inhibiting the activation of the TWEAK receptor, Fn14, can improve lupus-associated neuropsychiatric problems, including depression-like behavior (which can be indicated by a forced swim test and lack of desire for sweetened fluids). They also will explore whether TWEAK can cross the blood-brain barrier and cause other problems for lupus patients. Dr. Putterman is professor of microbiology & immunology and of medicine, as well as chief of the division of rheumatology
