Suggested Guidelines for Appointment or Promotion to Senior Rank
Appointment in the Clinician-Educator Track is reserved for faculty who show recognition of excellence in the candidate's area of expertise as an academic clinician and/or educator. Clinicians may demonstrate peer recognition as an outstanding scholarly physician/educator, director of a service, teaching courses, rounds, preceptor, lab mentor, conference leader.
Recommendation to the Clinical-Educator Track is made to the senior ranks of:
- Associate Professor of (Department):
- Professor of (Department):
Each of the following is intended to illustrate a career description for an individual who is eligible for an appointment or promotion to senior rank within the Clinician-Educator Track guidelines. The few illustrations given are meant to illustrate a range of career routes to senior rank. They are intended to reflect a balance, leaning, respectively, towards research, clinical, teaching and administrative contributions. When properly reviewed by the full curriculum vitae and other supporting materials, each is a model that would be appointed or promoted at senior rank.
Associate Professor of (Department):
- The candidate has regional recognition of excellence in their area of endeavor, as documented by peers from within and outside the institution.
- The candidate has regional recognition of excellence in teaching. This can be documented by invitations to lecture outside the institution, receipt of teaching awards, by serving with distinction as course leader or program director, and by comments from students, residents, fellows, and course leaders. Submission of a completed Einstein Teaching Portfolio is required.
- The candidate has evidence of significant ongoing service to the medical school and the medical profession, as evidenced by serving on school and/or hospital committees and membership/office in local, state, and national professional organizations.
- The candidate has participated in clinical or educational research protocols and possess evidence of scholarly activity by authoring or coauthoring scientific or educational communications. This is highly desirable.
Professor of (Department):
- The candidate has local and national recognition of excellence in their area of endeavor. Acceptable evidence of such recognition can be found in letters of reference from peers at other medical schools and universities.
- The candidate has local and national recognition of teaching excellence, as evidenced by participation outside the institution as a Grand Rounds speaker, Visiting Professor, or lecturer at professional societies/recognized CME courses, by receipt of teaching awards, by serving substantively and with distinction as course leader or program director, and by comments from students, residents, fellows, and course leaders. Submission of a completed Einstein Teaching Portfolio is required.
- The candidate has evidence of outstanding ongoing service to the medical school and the medical profession as documented by serving on school and/or hospital committees (preferably chairing at least one) and active participation (e.g. committee membership/office) in local, state, and/or national professional organizations.
- The candidate has evidence of scholarly activity by publication of at least two scientific or educational communications (e.g. case reports, reviews, book chapters, and scientific papers) authored or coauthored by the candidate. Participation in clinical or educational research protocols is highly desirable.
