Red Bags and Radioactive Waste

When discarding tritium or C-14 you should not use a bag labeled with a biohazard warning symbol or any bags that are red or orange in color. These bags are viewed as medical waste bags and the contents potentially infectious. The waste vendor that removes radioactive waste from the College will not accept waste in these bags. Any other bag is acceptable for use with H-3 and C-14.

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety will not be able to accept tritium and C-14 waste in these bags.

Note that short lived radioisotopes such as P-32, P-33, S-35, Cr-51, and I-125 are exempt from this requirement and can be stored in any bag.
