Shipping Radioactive Materials

The shipping of radioactive material is highly regulated. There are many City, State, Federal and International regulations that govern the movement of these materials intra-state, inter-state and internationally. There are three agencies involved: the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), all of which regulate the transport of radioactive materials.

In order to ship radioactive material out of Einstein the individual must be trained accordingly. Shipping radioactive material is not like shipping out a standard package. There are specific requirements related to the shipping papers, labeling and markings, record retention, emergency response and more. The training required to ship radioactive material is not offered at Einstein and must be taken by a certified vendor. Please contact the Radiation Safety Officer for a recommendation on which training to take and vendor to use.

Please note that radioactive materials may not be transported in an individuals personal vehicle or via public transportation. The individual may take the specific training required to ship radioactive materials, or they may contact a certified vendor to transport the material. Contact the Radiation Safety Officer if radioactive material needs to be shipped off of Einstein’s campus.
