Trainings Offered by the Radiation Safety Officer
The EH&S Department offers multiple training courses related to radiation. Required trainings are based off of the type of work a researcher or laboratory plans to do. For instance, if a researcher will work with or around radioactive materials or utilize radiation producing equipment such as x-ray devices, the researcher will be require to be trained prior to working around the hazard.
Radiation Safety Training:
This training is for anyone who works with or around radioactive materials at the College. Any laboratory licensed to work with radioactive materials must have all of their staff take this training, including the Principal Investigator. The training typically takes 4-hours to complete with a quiz at the end. An annual refresher training is required for all of those who continue to work with or around radioactive materials.
Radiation Safety Training for Irradiator Users:
This training is for anyone who will work with an irradiator. Please contact the Radiation Safety Officer for more information.
Radiation Awareness Training:
This training is offered to anyone at the College who would like to learn more about the basics of radiation. This training is also provided annually to select groups such as the Housekeeping Department and to students in the summer high school program.
X-ray Safety Training:
This training is for anyone who works with x-ray producing devices/equipment at the College. The training typically takes 2.5 hours to complete with a quiz at the end. An annual refresher training is required for all of those who continue to work with x-ray producing equipment.
LASER Safety Training:
This training is for anyone who will work with or around LASERs at the College.
Guide to Liquid Scintillation Counting:
Liquid Scintillation Counting is required for laboratories working with radioactive materials in their laboratory. Please review this Guide to Liquid Scintillation Counting for information on how to use some of the liquid scintillation counters on campus.
