GUEST:

The proposed NIH budget shows a $2 billion increase, which would be most welcome. The transfer of NIH grants from old Einstein to the new Einstein is almost completed. The indirect cost rate should remain the same at 67%.

The Einstein Board of Trustees met on December 14th, with presentations by Drs. Burns on technology transfer, Almo on immunotherapeutics and Schramm on the Center for Experimental Therapeutics, and the presentations went well. Albert Seminsky will be the new Executive Director of the Development Office and will begin on January 19, 2016. Yaron Tomer has accepted the position of Chair of Medicine, and will come to Einstein as of March 1, 2016.

The Chartis Group process was discussed. The current financial situation constrains hiring with the emphasis to be on support for recruitment of chairs of Medicine and Neuroscience, Cancer Center Director, and selected areas of strength that can synergize with Montefiore. This combined strategy is intended to also stimulate philanthropy. Evaluation of junior faculty performance since 2006 indicates that the best chances for success occur when there is a group of faculty with common interests to provide support. As resources develop, a broader range of new faculty hires will be a future goal.

The meeting adjourned at 4:07 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Jeffrey E. Segall, Ph.D.
Speaker, Einstein Senate
