There was a presentation by Dr. Marti Grayson on revising the medical school curriculum.

Past work has been bringing the program up to LCME code. Although Einstein’s current product is excellent by all measures there are drivers for change including: rapid evolution in medicine, changing patient populations, changes in tools for learning, the 2010 Carnegie foundation report recommendations, and the LCME report.

The timeline is by end of August 2016 to settle the plan for 1st year beginning in August 2017, then during the year develop the plan for the 2nd year along with working out the details for the first year. The committee in charge (CDEC) consists of 19 faculty members and 7 medical students. Overall plan is for a zero-based curriculum, integrating clinical more from the beginning and shortening the foundational years, conduct needs assessment, and engage the Einstein community (thought leaders conference).

The guiding principles include: core competencies, a flexible, evolving curriculum, fully integrating across the curriculum, a variety of methods for different learning styles, formative and summative assessments, immersion occurring from the start, individualized mentored research experience, skills for critical thinking, formal faculty development supported by the institution, and advancing social justice especially for underserved populations in the Bronx.

Current work is on creating the blueprint, defining ground rules, and curricular themes. Appointment of the foundation phase (new preclinical term) working group is done. Additional working groups will be appointed in next few meetings.

The meeting adjourned at 3:58 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Jeffrey E. Segall, Ph.D.
Speaker, Einstein Senate
