After approval of the Minutes, Dr. Allen Spiegel gave his Dean’s report. He informed on the ongoing Clinical Department Chair searches, about the new CEO at Jacobi Hospital, and about the Lasker and Nobel Prize awards this year.
In his Speaker’s Report, Dr. Jeffrey Segall reported on the Board of Trustees and two Council meetings. At the Board of Trustees meeting there was discussion about the importance of increasing philanthropy for Einstein. The Council meetings focused on the structure of Einstein and Montefiore, discussions about plans to increase the Graduate Student Program, and proposals for changes to the Faculty Promotion process.
Dr. Kelvin Davies, the Chair of the Committee on Committees, asked the Senate for approval of Dr. Solomon Moshe’s selection as the Senate Parlamentarian.
Dr. Moshe then ran the Senate Officer elections, and Drs. Jeffrey Segall, Elyse Sussman, Eliana Scemes, and Matthew Gamble were reelected as Speaker, Vice Speaker, Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.
Dr. Pamela Stanley, Chair of the Faculty Interactions Committee, informed on the results of the votes supporting a biannual institution lecture. The Senate approved the proposal to have a lecture in the spring to test its effectiveness.
Dr. Ed Burns, the Executive Dean, gave a presentation regarding a proposal for improving academic promotions. One aspect of the proposal regarded the removal of the modifying word Clinical from the designated tracks, the other aspects related to the creation of Tenure of Title and Clinical Expert tracks. The Senate approved the following changes: 1) creation of the designation ‘Tenure of Title’ for faculty on affiliate payrolls, 2) allowing professionals without an MD or PhD degree to be considered for faculty positions, typically Associate, and 3) removal of the modifier ‘Clinical’ from Associate Professor or Professor on the CET track.
