It was agreed to plan on having a presentation on student housing in the fall.

Shailesh Shenoy provided an IT Status update.

A new independent connection to the internet was completed in Nov 2016, saving $3 million in annual fees to YU.

YU maintains responsibilities for student banner, exchange email, and name resolution. Montefiore IT has responsibility for the network, active directory, information security, support of Banner/finance, HR, procurement, 24/7 service desk

Einstein IT does remainder. Homegrown YU systems (admissions and faculty records) needed to be reverse engineered due to lack of documentation – currently we are looking for new systems as replacements with documentation.

It is cheaper to do Einstein IT tasks in house because Montefiore IT is not really designed for academic IT.

Unique for Einstein is an arrangement of 5 network zones (not Montefiore IT standard): standard, conventional DMZ (computers that require public internet access), science DMZ (computers that cannot comply with policies), independently managed devices (personal computers), and guest computers.

The Council had asked for clarification on a number of issues:

  1. slow wireless – hopefully most places are covered but if there is a science issue then IT should be notified
  2. email – we are currently considering how to transition upon getting independent degree granting status.
  3. issue of notifications of problems – there is a plan to set up a web site providing notifications, and opt in for messages regarding problems
  4. data server – should be working better – contact IT if there are problems. There is a plan to provide a new reststop with 5x the capacity.
  5. For AIF iLab issues, the plan is to work on resolution in the fall. During the summer there is a push to upgrade student areas before classes begin in the fall.
  6. A new ticketing system will be coming online – it will allow people to go to a web site to enter information that then goes directly to the relevant person.
  7. A range of software is available free to Einstein faculty, students and staff including Graphpad Prism, Matlab, Mathematica, R, SPSS, IPA, and Dropbox .

The meeting adjourned at 3:55 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,
Jeffrey E. Segall, Ph.D.
