The minutes of the June 6 and June 11 2018 meetings were approved.
The possible value and uses of the Senate Council were discussed, including the value of the council as a sounding board/discussion forum that is informal and complementary as well as providing input to the administration.
Fundraising strategy was covered as a multiprong ongoing endeavor. It would include initiatives for rebuilding the endowment and updating infrastructure/buildings, making medical education debt free, programs for getting grateful patients and alumni involvement, and venture philanthropy as a possibility. Tech transfer should be part of our key function.
The white papers were described. They should include: 1) a strategic planning piece such as where the department is now and where it would like to be in 5 years with broad areas for junior faculty member recruitment and 2) brief snippets of departmental functions/strengths/gaps that could be read by potential donors and inspire philanthropy.
The issues of junior faculty recruitment and mentoring and pre-evaluation of grant proposals, promoting junior and senior faculty for opportunities were briefly mentioned.
The challenges of supporting new translational studies, clinical interactions, and clinical teaching were discussed.
The meeting adjourned at 4:05 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jeffrey E. Segall, Ph.D.
Speaker, Einstein Senate
