Einstein Senate

Senate Meeting: Wednesday, March 1, 2023

  • Dr. Tomaselli gave the Dean’s report. He announced that Einstein is receiving a $100 million anonymous gift and answered several follow-up questions from faculty members. He also provided updates on the initial reports from the cancer center and LCME visits – which were both positive overall – as well as on a number of other issues, including:
    • Leadership recruitment efforts,
    • Discussion around participation in the US News and World Reports medical school rankings,
    • Match results in ophthalmology and urology,
    • Governor Hochul’s visit in early February,
    • Infrastructure issues on campus, and
    • Unionization decision by Montefiore residents.
  • Dr. Arnsten gave the Speaker’s report and indicated that the date of the April meeting will change to March 29th due to the Passover holiday. She also offered additional context on the residents’ vote for unionization. Jessica Rieder presented on the inaugural Einstein Impact Day on March 22nd.
  • Dr. Holden provided updates from the Office of Diversity Enhancement. There are currently two open positions. The role of Associate Dean of Diversity and Enhancement just opened for applications and resumes are also being accepted for Director of Graduate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
  • As part of reporting from the Committee on Committees, Dr. Stanley spoke about the activities of the Faculty Interactions Committee, including the Seeds for Collaboration and Pathways to Success at the Einstein Cores sessions. She also outlined the work the committee has done with salary data (now taken over by the Fiscal Affairs Committee) and proposing speakers for presidential lectures.
  • Dr. Yang brought to the Senate the issue of the childcare benefit that is available for Einstein employees but not those at Montefiore. She noted the issues this poses for recruitment, retention, and equity and inclusion and shared a slide showing the current benefits. After discussion, the Senate agreed to form a short-term committee to assess the issue and create a proposal for approval by the Senate and subsequent presentation to Montefiore.
  • There was no additional new or old business at this meeting.
