Einstein Senate
Senate Meeting: Wednesday, March 29, 2023
- Dr. Burns gave the Dean’s report because Dr. Tomaselli was traveling. He updated the Senate on a number of ongoing topics, including:
- Review of the tenure and compensation policy;
- Creation by the Board of Trustees of an ad hoc Committee on Research Affairs;
- Continuing and upcoming searches to fill open positions for Dean, Senior Associate Dean for Clinical and Translational Research, and a number of department chairs;
- Upcoming events in May, among them Prime Research Day, PhD convocation, and Commencement.
- Dr. Arnsten gave the Speaker’s report and reported on the recent Senate Council meetings and the decision to reconvene the Tenure and Bylaws Committees. She also announced the next Seeds for Collaboration faculty mixer. As part of the report, Shailesh Shenoy made an announcement about cybersecurity awareness and the fake emails being sent out as tests. There was discussion about the applicability of some of the instructions for identifying phishing messages to the Montefiore email system.
- Dr. Diaz-Griffero indicated, on behalf of the Committee on Committees, that there will be reports from the Quality-of-Life Committee and Senate Fiscal Affairs Committee at the next Senate meeting.
- Dr. Holden provided updates from the Office of Diversity Enhancement. She welcomed the new Director of Student Success, Monique Fortuné, and outlined the illustrious lineup of speakers that is planned for Diversity Week on April 25th through 27th.
- Dr. Mimoza Meholli gave a summary of the results from the 2023 Match. In line with previous years, almost all Einstein students found positions. She discussed several interesting developments, including an increase in international medical graduates, a continued upward trend in unfilled Emergency Medicine spots, and an all-time high in primary care positions.
- Dr. Yang reported on activities of the childcare benefit task force, which met during the third week of March. Additional information on the current benefits available to Einstein employees through Bright Horizons was obtained from Einstein HR and the group developed internal and external surveys to understand availability and need for childcare benefits at Einstein, Montefiore, and similar institutions, which the Senate was asked to help disseminate. A formal resolution was made to create an official Senate committee, which was approved.
