Senate Meeting: Wednesday, May 3, 2023

  • Dr. Arnsten gave the Speaker’s Report, which focused on the issues discussed at the recent Senate Council meetings.
  • Dr. Burns gave the Dean’s Report. He updated the Senate on several topics, including:
    • o Commencement for medical and graduate students on May 23rd;
    • o Other upcoming events, such as PRIME Research Day and Paul Henkind Day;
    • o Continuing and planned searches to fill open positions, with an announcement on the new Dean expected in June.
  • Dr. Holden provided updates from the Office of Diversity Enhancement. She discussed the searches for an Associate Dean for Medical Students and Director of Graduate DNI for the Graduate School. She also reported on the success of the inaugural Diversity Week at Einstein and indicated that the Office of Diversity Enhancement will be celebrating its 40th anniversary on May 22nd.
  • Dr. Diaz-Griffero, on behalf of the Committee on Committees, introduced presentations by Dr. Achkar, who spoke about the work of the Academic Computing Task Force and its subgroups related to expertise and infrastructure on big data, and Neil Kaplan, who detailed the safety statistics for Einstein over the last few years and outlined the wide range of initiatives underway by the Security department.
  • Dr. Arnsten asked for input on whether Senate meetings should return to their pre-pandemic in-person format, continue in Zoom, or have a hybrid format. The preliminary consensus favored hybrid. She also provided a brief update on two ongoing items of old business: the revisions to the tenure policy and the bylaws project.
  • There was no additional new or old business at this meeting. The Senate will meet in June and then convene in July and August
