Einstein Senate
Senate Meeting: Wednesday, June 7, 2023
Dr. Arnsten gave the Speaker’s Report and an update on the recent Senate Council meetings, which included discussions of admission and recruitment of students and post docs, as well as of IT and communications issues. She also let the Senate know that roughly two-thirds of the members voted to offer a hybrid format for future meetings. This change will hopefully be implemented by September, pending set-up of suitable audiovisual and communications equipment.
Dr. Burns gave the Dean’s Report. He indicated that the Dean will end his time at Einstein in August and there will be a celebration for him on June 27th. A new Dean has not yet been appointed. Dr. Burns also reported to the Senate on several other topics, including the resumption of admission of international and DACA students; the upcoming decisions on LCME accreditation and the Einstein-Montefiore Cancer Center; the visit from Middle States in July; and the leadership of the Office of Grant Support.
Dr. Diaz-Griffero, on behalf of the Committee on Committees, introduced a presentation by Dr. Gennerich, who showed data on Einstein salary distributions by academic rank, gender, and basic science versus clinical positions. He answered a number of questions, with assistance from Yvonne Ramirez and Dr. Burns, particularly in regard to the gender discrepancies.
Dr. Holden provided updates from the Office of Diversity Enhancement. She discussed the agenda for the next D&I council meeting; the opening of applications for Associate Dean for Diversity Enhancement for Medical Students; and a forthcoming survey on pathway programs.
Drs. Alpert, Ludwig, and Vaugh presented on the many mental health resources available to the Einstein/Montefiore community, including the Einstein Student Mental Health Center and Montefiore Einstein Psychiatry Associates.
Dr. Freedman offered a snapshot of the incoming class of PhD students and Dr. Bresnick gave an overview of the Einstein postdocs and the new Biomedical Sciences Leadership Program.
There was no additional new or old business at this meeting.
