The June minutes were approved.

 

Dean’s Report

Dean Allen Spiegel noted the passing of George Fruhman, one of Einstein’s founding faculty members. The recent work of Kartik Chandran, elucidating the basis for Ebola virus entry into cells, was highlighted. The imminent NIH funding of the Rose F. Kennedy Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, or IDDRC, headed by Steven Walkley, was announced. The Dean also announced that the long-standing chief operating officer at Montefiore, Bob Conaty, will be retiring at the end of this year, and that his replacement will be Philip Ozuah, our current Chair of Pediatrics. Executive Dean Ed Burns announced several additional appointments: Barbara Birshtein as director of Einstein’s new training grant initiative; Racheline Habousha as director of the library; and Genevieve Neal-Perry as Associate Dean for Faculty Mentoring. The promotion of Victoria Freedman to Associate Dean for Graduate Studies was also announced.

 

Speaker’s Report

Senate Speaker Jeff Segall reported that the Senate Council continues to discuss proposed changes to the Ph.D. program. He also discussed the Senate bylaws and procedures.

 

Committee on Committees

Vinayaka Prasad, Chair of the Committee on Committees, received approval for the proposed slates for the two Committees on Appointments and Promotions (for Associate Professors and Professors).

 

Paul Moniz and David Flores: Navigating Social Media--Overview, Official Guidelines, and Best Practices

Paul Moniz, Director of Communications and Marketing, and David Flores, Social Media Manager, described Einstein’s involvement in social media and distributed official guidelines for its use. The social media guidelines can also be found here:
