ALBERT EINSTEIN COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
MINUTES OF SENATE COUNCIL MEETING
WED JAN 20, 2021
FINAL
PRESENT: Drs. Gordon Tomaselli, Ed Burns
VIA ZOOM: Drs. Julia Arnsten, Jonathan Lai, Jacqueline Achkar, Jonathan Alpert, Teresa DiLorenzo, Matthew Gamble, Chandan Guha, Carmen Isasi, Nadine Katz, Marla Keller, Susan Klugman, Victor Schuster, Simone Sidoli, Pamela Stanley, Sylvia Suadicani, Allison Ludwig; Mr. Ryan Graff
ABSENT: Drs. Jonathan Alpert, Nerys Benfield
EXCUSED: Dr. Kalyani Dhusia
- Meeting minutes from the Jan 6, 2021 meeting were approved.
- Dr. Simone Sidoli, Dept. of Biochemistry, was introduced as an Assistant Professor appointee to the Council.
- Dr. Arnsten reviewed the charge of the Senate Council, as written in the Senate Bylaws.
- Restructuring of the Einstein Basic Science Departments was discussed. Two taskforces were formed and examined this issue in detail, and recommended reduction in the number of the Departments by two or three. A key consideration would be how to reappoint faculty in those Departments that are eliminated to other Departments in a way that enhances potential synergies, and that is not disruptive or damaging to students, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty.
- The new joint BA/BS-MD program between Yeshiva University, Einstein, and Montefiore was discussed. This program allows qualified students from Yeshiva University to be considered for early acceptance to Einstein, upon matriculation at Yeshiva, if they maintain academic and community excellence
- There was a general discussion of gender diversity among the faculty, and strategies to improve it. This is an important topic because it affects recruiting of new and diverse faculty, staff, and students.
The meeting adjourned at 4:00 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Jonathan Lai, Ph.D.
Vice Speaker, Einstein Senate
