Council Meeting: Wednesday, January 23, 2008



PRESENT: Dr. Spiegel, Drs Weidenheim, Cohen, Birshtein, Burk, Freeman, Townsend, Burns.

Excused: Drs. Hays, Mehler, Segall.

Absent: Drs. Etgen, Horwitz, M. Smith, Foreman, Shulkin, Mr. Walsh, Mr. Forman


The minutes of the previous Senate Council meeting held on January 9, 2008 were reviewed, corrected and approved.

Updates from the Dean:

The search committee or the Chair for Computational Systems Biology is looking at candidates. The search committee for a Chair for Genetics has a primary candidate. The search committee for the Director of the Belfer Institute has been charged. This committee includes two post docs and one new faculty member on it. This Director will focus on academic and professional issues related to the Belfer Institute.

New Facilities Director for AECOM. Mr. Sal Ciampo is the new Facilities Director for AECOM. He will be introduced at the next Senate meeting.

Campus Master Plan: A firm, Ehrenkrantz Eckstut & Kuhn Architects has been hired to assist with this plan. There will be an Oversight Committee for the Campus Master Plan. All constituents of the academic community including faculty and students will be represented on this steering committee. The importance of community relations was discussed in reference to campus improvements.

Institutional advancement and development. Dr. Spiegel is searching for an individual to direct the development office with the help of a search firm.

Michael R. Price Center for Genetic and Translational Medicine. The building is open and people are moving in.


Ideas for Senate Agendas: The Speaker requested ideas for presentations at upcoming Senate meetings. Ideas to be worked on include presentations by Dr. Safyer, the new President of Montefiore Medical Center; other CEOs from the affiliated hospitals, and computer services at AECOM. Mr. Shivers will report on the budget in March. Mr. Earle will provide a website update in April.
