The Affordable HOME Study is an Einstein (Dept. of Family & Social Medicine) and Fordham University collaborative research initiative funded through the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation designed to learn more about the relationship between housing and the health of Hispanics/Latinos living in the Bronx. Within the debate for available affordable housing and the right to live in healthy neighborhoods in the United States is the need to better understand how the housing environment influences health in urban neighborhoods. The Affordable HOME study was designed to examine how different types of housing, including the different types of affordable housing programs and community resources influence the cardiovascular health and health related behaviors of Latinos in the Bronx.

How Will the Study be Conducted?
All information will be collected via in-person interviews including weight and height measurement
• A random sample of Latino adults (ages 18-64) in the south and west Bronx who are eligible for low-income-housing assistance and 1) section 8 housing; 2) public housing; or 3) private market housing will be selected
• We will administer a survey to sampled Latinos to collect data on physical activity, diet, a broad range of sociodemographic factors, health, housing and neighborhood conditions
• Aspects of neighborhood environment will also be measured using census, administrative data and data obtained from commercial services
