Nereida C. Correa, M.D. ‘85

The Distinguished Alumnus/Clinical Practitioner Award

Dr. Nereida “Nellie” Correa, associate professor of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health and of family and social medicine at Einstein, is known as a superb clinician and educator who focuses on health disparities, narrative medicine and culture, global health, and mentoring. She is a senior advisor to Einstein’s Hispanic Center of Excellence, the first such center in New York State, and co-director of the Summer Undergraduate Mentorship Program. Currently the board chair of the National Hispanic Medical Association, Dr. Correa also has an active practice in the Bronx and is an attending physician at the North Central Bronx Hospital of the New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation. She has served on the Maternal Mortality Review Board of the New York City Department of Health and has been active in initiating a fetal and infant mortality review process in the Bronx. She teaches in the Patients, Doctors, and Communities course, required of third-year medical students, and has developed the section of the course on cultural competency and health disparities. Dr. Correa was the education core director of the Bronx Center to Reduce and Eliminate Ethnic and Racial Disparities in Health and took part in the development and publication of a monograph, Teaching Cases Exploring Cross-Cultural Care. She graduated from Bronx Community College and obtained her B.S. from Long Island University and an M.A. in nursing education from New York University. After nineteen years as a nurse, Dr. Correa received her M.D. from Einstein and an M.P.H. from Columbia University. She was inducted in 2021 into Einstein’s Leo M. Davidoff Society for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching Medical Students.
