The Einstein Global Diabetes Institute (GDI) consists of a team of dedicated diabetes researchers and physicians with the mission of harnessing Einstein's medical research and education prowess to combat the burgeoning global diabetes epidemic (currently 170 million people worldwide, with a predicted increase to 370 million by the year 2030).
The GDI partners with universities in the United States, Africa, and India in order to make an impact on the disease worldwide and advocate for more global research into the causes of and treatment of "malnutrition" diabetes (diabetes that occurs in a person with a BMI of 17 or 18), a devastating and under-recognized disease increasingly seen in undeveloped regions.
