About the Institute for Health Equity

Health equity is achieved when everyone can attain their full potential for health and well-being, according to the World Health Organization. The Institute for Health Equity at Montefiore Einstein provides resources, programs, and project support for researchers and community partners who work to understand and address the drivers of persistent health disparities that affect communities in the Bronx. Investigations of health disparities in the local community and the pursuit of health equity for every New Yorker have long been at the heart of the work we do at Montefiore Einstein.

Together, we can shape the future of social health research and health equity innovation and advocacy.

What is Health Equity Research?

Health equity research is commonly described as a multidisciplinary scientific field that investigates the causes of health disparities and identifies interventions to ensure everyone has a fair, just opportunity to achieve their highest level of health. In this framing, the study of social, economic, and structural determinants of health to eliminate systemic inequalities is the direct subject in focus.

More broadly, any investigation of health, disease, wellbeing, or access to care can be considered health equity research if it is designed to reduce disparities linked to social or structural biases and is conducted to uphold ethical principles of justice, beneficence, and personhood.

Our Values

As leaders in transdisciplinary social health research and health equity innovation, we serve as a homebase for collaborative, cross-disciplinary, and community-partnered health equity research.

Equity by Design

We believe a fair and equitable health landscape is achievable if we prioritize purposeful, equity-informed design at all levels. We design for equity in all stages and at every translational cross-section of the research cycle.

Data in Action

The availability of robust health-related data is an invaluable resource and should be used to catalyze change that can be felt in our community. We leverage data to create tools and drive interventions that improve health and wellbeing.

Advocacy for All

Everyone deserves a fair opportunity to meet their full health potential, and no person or group is excluded from the scope of our mission. Advocacy efforts, whether individual or collective, are vital to the pursuit of health equity and benefit us all.

Community is Created

Community is something we build, nurture, and actively maintain together. As an institute, we commit our time, attention, and actions to a community-building approach that is dynamic, intentional and bidirectional.

Progress Needs Partnership

Lasting relationships and capacity for collaboration are essential to any work that aims to create change within systems or communities. Working in partnership enhances and expands the impact of each partner’s efforts. We value partnerships that are reciprocal, results-oriented, and rooted in a shared vision.
