Resident Life
Living in The Bronx
- The Bronx is a vibrant community of people from differing backgrounds. This makes it an especially rich atmosphere in which to train physicians to care for a diverse patient population. The diversity of people is complemented by diverse terrain: parks, gardens, and estates are juxtaposed with apartment buildings, bodegas, and restaurants.
In addition to the people that make up the community of the Bronx, we have an enormous amount of park land, more than any other borough in New York City. Montefiore Medical Center borders on Van Cortland Park, the largest inland park in the city with riding stables, cricket and soccer fields, an 18-hole public golf course, and a complete marathon course within its borders; a short car ride brings you to Orchard Beach and City Island or the New York Botanical Gardens. Near the architecturally awesome mansions in Riverdale are the manicured gardens of Wave Hill (open to the public for strolling, picnicking or outdoor concerts) which offer spectacular views of the Hudson River. A connecting system of bike paths lets you wind your way through the parkways of the borough. An hour's drive takes you out on hiking or cross-country trails scattered throughout Westchester and neighboring counties.
Above all else what makes living in New York great are the people. Sampling authentic cuisines, parades, cultural fairs, or just a walk down the street can take you all around the world. The diversity of New York City creates a richness unparalleled anywhere else.
