Division of Hematology

Research

The Bronx Blood Research Fund provides excellence in research and advances therapy and management of the thalassemias and the hemoglobinopathies.

About

With combined resources from the Montefiore (Moses) and Einstein campuses, the Division of Hematology's history of excellence in scientific investigation includes funded research in embryonic stem cell investigations, high-throughput red blood cell engineering, chemically modified hemoglobins and albumin, in vitro red blood cell production, murine models of sickle cell disease, the role of nitric oxide and inflammation on microcirculation, plasma expanders, genetics, hemoglobin disorders, thrombosis, and hemostasis.

Hematology Research Studies

Research Investigators

Seetharama A. Acharya, Ph.D.
Dr. Acharya has developed groundbreaking patents for work on hemoglobin and albumin modification as novel nitric oxide - producing resuscitation fluids with anti-inflammatory activity and an intrinsic ability to increase the efficacy of releasing oxygen from the red cell.

Ellen W. Friedman, M.D
Dr. Ellen Friedman’s passion is the study of the blood (hematology) and ensuring that the next generation of medical practitioners are prepared to analyze and treat blood-related problems.

Henny Billett, M.D., M.Sc., FACP
Risk factors for thrombosis and microvascular disease, effect of race and ethnicity on thrombosis, thrombotic and microvascular complications of sickle cell disease.

John M. Greally, MB, BCh, Ph.D.
Epigenetic regulation of gene expression.

Eric Bouhassira, Ph.D.
Hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells that can differentiate into red cells, T cells, platelets, and all other cell types that comprise blood.

Rhoda Hirsch, Ph.D.
Hemoglobinopathy HbE (β26 Glu →Lys) and its related diseases

Paul S. Frenette, M.D.
How hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and mature blood cells traffic in vivo.

Michael B. Stemerman, M.D.
LDL alters the function of the vascular endothelium and this alteration may be an important mechanism for the development of atherosclerosis.

Irina Murakhovskaya. M.D.
Dr Murakhovskaya's interests are in autoimmune disorders in hematology, hematologic problems associated with pregnancy, and plasma cell dyscrasias, such as MGUS and smoldering myeloma.

Swati Goel, M.D.
Dr. Goel's research focuses on patients with blood disorders and blood-related cancers. Dr. Swati Goel specializes in the field of myeloproliferative disorders like myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera, and essential thrombocytosis.

Margarita KushnirMargarita Kushnir, M.D.
Dr. Kushnir's research focuses on venous thrombosis, with emphasis on obesity and cancer, as well as the use of direct oral anticoagulants in these settings. She is currently recruiting patients for a clinical trial that investigates efficacy of prophylactic rivaroxaban in patients with active malignancy.

Ugochi Ogu
Dr. Ogu’s interests are in sickle cell disease and transition care. She currently participates in clinical trials in sickle cell disease aimed at increasing hemoglobin levels, and improving end organ disease. She is currently the Assistant Director of the Montefiore Sickle Cell Center for Adults.
